*Coronavirus
Johnson County Public Health (JCPH) confirmed today that there are currently thirteen positive cases of COVID-19 in Johnson County.

JCPH is working with the Iowa Department of Public Health (IDPH), State Hygienic Laboratory, University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics, Mercy Iowa City, local schools and other public and private partners to contain the spread of COVID-19 and mitigate its potential impact.

Everyone can do their part to help respond to this emerging public health threat. Everyday prevention methods are very important. Wash your hands frequently. Stay home if you’re ill. Cover coughs and sneezes with a tissue. Routinely clean frequently touched surfaces like doorknobs, light switches and countertops with typically-used cleaners.

For the general public who are unlikely to be exposed to the virus at this time, the immediate health risk of COVID-19 is low. Individual risk of this virus is dependent upon exposure. This includes travelers returning from affected international locations where community spread is occurring including Italy, Japan, South Korea, China and Iran. These locations are updated by the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) and can be found online at https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/index.html.

If you have recently been to an area with ongoing spread of COVID-19 or have been exposed to someone sick with this virus in the last 14 days, you may face some limitations on your movement and activity. JCPH will specifically contact those who test positive for the virus and those who have had close contact with those individuals.

Symptoms of COVID-19 include fever, cough and shortness of breath. If you develop COVID-19 symptoms, contact your healthcare provider, and tell them about your symptoms and your travel or exposure to a COVID-19 patient before you go to the clinic or office.

IDPH provides updates on persons being monitored, tested and test results every Monday, Wednesday and Friday on IDPH’s COVID-19 webpage (https://idph.iowa.gov/Emerging-Health-Issues/Novel-Coronavirus). IDPH has requested Iowans returning from a country where COVID-19 is spreading to voluntarily self-isolate for 14 days following their return.

Preparation is key. Individuals and communities should prepare for COVID-19. IDPH provides targeted recommendations for schools, businesses, long-term care facilities and more on their website. You can also call 211 with questions.

*Coronavirus Help…
There is nothing good about the Coronavirus. Nothing. But perhaps it will demonstrate the desperate need Americans have for sick leave and health insurance.

Nothing will help- arrest Coronavirus more than getting all Americans sick leave and health insurance. We should have done it 80 years ago. Let’s do it now.

*Saint Patrick’s Day!
Happy St. Patrick’s Day on March 17! St. Patrick’s Day is one of my favorite days of the year. While not an “official” holiday, this day has long been celebrated heartily by my Irish family.

March 17 is a Tuesday this year, but we will still find time to celebrate correctly!  J  Meanwhile, I hope each and every one of you is touched by a little luck o’ the Irish!

*St. Patrick’s Day Trivia
Here are some interesting St. Patrick’s Day facts:

*With 23 percent of the population of Celtic ancestry, Massachusetts has a higher proportion of residents of Irish descent than any other state, edging out New Hampshire (20 percent) and Rhode Island (18 percent). The remaining New England states -- Connecticut, Vermont and Maine -- also rank among the top 10 in this category, as do Delaware, New Jersey, Pennsylvania and Montana.

*New York City has more residents of Irish descent than any city in the world, including Dublin! Boston, however, has the largest percentage of Irish residents of any large American city.

*22 - Gallons of beer consumed per capita by Americans annually. (The equivalent of 176 pints per year.) I used to bring that average up. Now I bring it down!

*9 - Number of places in the US which share the name of Dublin, Ireland's capital. Dublin, OH was the most populous, at 31,392, followed closely by Dublin, CA at 29,973.

*Bob Sullivan
March 17 holds a special place in my heart that goes beyond St. Patrick’s Day. That was also the birthday of my late father, Bob Sullivan.

Dad was a proud union man, Hawkeye fan, and Irishman. We were father and son, but also best friends. I can honestly say he was probably the most fun person I have ever known.

Unfortunately, he left this world much too soon, and never got the chance to meet any of his grandchildren. I miss him every single day, but especially on St. Paddy’s Day.

So, if you are looking for an extra toast on St. Patrick’s Day, allow me to suggest that you raise a glass to Bob Sullivan.

         Happy birthday, Dad.

*DID YOU KNOW?  There are more Americans of Irish origin than there are Irish in Ireland. (36 million Americans claimed Irish ancestry in 2008; the population of Ireland was 4.4 million at the time.)
